Many of us have been affected by the recent UK and world-wide economic down-turn. However, in Northumberland there are positive moves towards recovery as individuals are busily planning and setting up businesses so as to take advantage of the economic upturn.
Having been made redundant in the employment down-turn, Sandra Greenley was finding it difficult to find the part time employment that would meet her personal needs. Missing the routine of work, but being independent and having a clear vision of what she wanted to do, Sandra sought information about working for herself.
She contacted NBSL who offer free, impartial advice and practical assistance about starting your own business through their Enterprise Bridge Programme. Melanie Thompson-Glen, a locally based Business Adviser with NBSL, helped Sandra to explore the idea of becoming self employed as a domestic cleaner, how to register with HMRC and to develop a business plan which would also help her apply for funding to start up and develop her new business.
Melanie said, “I worked with Sandra to develop her business plan initially with a view to applying for Rural Development Programme funding, but unfortunately the eligibility for this funding changed and it was no longer an option. Gong through the business planning process helped Sandra feel confident enough to adjust her hourly rates, take on new customers and participate in the free business skills workshops we have on offer.”
Sandra confirmed “NBSL really supported me to develop my idea and start working for myself. In conducting market research and developing my business plan, I became more confident that this was what I wanted to do. I found the whole process really informative and useful, and it has given me the base information required if I should need to approach funders for assistance towards developing my business further in the future.” The Little Yellow Duster is now up and running with an increasing client list and can be contacted on (01665) 577564.
